At 44, I Was Exhausted, Anxious, and Gaining Weight. It Was My Hormones.
Tired, anxious, gaining weight despite doing everything right. I thought I was the problem. Turns out my hormones were.
After a frustrating decade of failed diets and undiagnosed perimenopause, Nora started systematically researching every health treatment and program she could find. This site is those notes, organized. She covers GLP-1 programs, hormone health, sleep, and everything else nobody explained to her when she needed it most.

I turned 44 last spring. By the fall I was a different person.
Not in a good way. I was exhausted by 2pm every day. I’d wake up at 3am and lie there until 5am. Small things made me cry. My jeans didn’t fit despite no change to how I ate. I started cancelling plans because the idea of showering and getting dressed felt impossible.
I thought I was depressed. Or had thyroid issues. Or was just falling apart. My PCP ran the standard panel. Everything came back “normal.”
Have you been checked for perimenopause? I had the same thing at 43. It changes everything.
“I had been to three doctors in two years. All of them said my levels were ‘normal for my age.’ None of them suggested perimenopause because I was 42 and still getting my period. I eventually found a doctor who specializes in menopause and she diagnosed me in the first appointment. I genuinely cried in the car afterward — not because anything was wrong, but because I finally had an explanation.”

The thing nobody had mentioned
I’d had no idea perimenopause could start this early or look like this. I had pictured menopause as hot flashes and missed periods — neither of which I’d had.
What I’d actually had was the real perimenopause symptom cluster: 3am wake-ups, anxiety, weight gain, brain fog, joint aches I’d been blaming on sitting too much. It had been building for two years and I’d been treating each symptom as its own separate problem.

This pattern is recognized — and it has a name.
The symptoms you checked are consistent with what physicians see in women with perimenopausal metabolic dysfunction. Every month without a diagnosis is another month your body works against you. The intake takes 8 minutes. It's free.

What I actually did
I’d been told to “go see an endocrinologist.” The next available appointment was 11 weeks out. That wasn’t going to work.
A different friend told me about online HRT programs — specifically Winona. Female physicians who specialize in menopause. Eligibility check is free and takes 10 minutes. I figured worst case I lose 10 minutes.
I did the check on a Tuesday night.
How it works
- 1
Online intake
Ten minutes. Medical history, current symptoms, family history. Nothing intrusive. No payment yet.
- 2
Physician call
A female internist who specializes in menopause called me Thursday. We talked for 25 minutes. She agreed it was almost certainly perimenopause and walked me through what an appropriate protocol would look like.
- 3
Bioidentical protocol shipped
Estradiol patch + oral progesterone. Discreet packaging. Arrived in 5 days.
- 4
Check-ins
Two weeks in I had a quick message exchange to adjust the dose. Four weeks in I had a proper check-in call.
What changed
The first thing I noticed was sleep. By the end of the second week I was sleeping through the night for the first time in 18 months. That alone was worth everything.
By week four, the anxiety was meaningfully lower. By week six I felt like my brain was back online — I could focus for an hour without effort. Weight didn’t move dramatically but stopped climbing, and clothes started fitting better as the bloat went down.
By month three I felt like myself again. Not a better version. Not a “transformed” version. Just me — the person I’d been before everything got weird.

The therapy piece
I’ll be honest about one more thing. The HRT did most of the work. But about two months in, I realized I’d built up a backlog of unprocessed stress from the previous two years of feeling like I was failing at being a person. I started weekly online therapy alongside the HRT.
Different problems, both real. The hormones explained the biology. The therapy helped me make sense of what those two years had done to my sense of self.

What I’d tell my friend
If you’re between 38 and 50 and any of the symptom list above sounds familiar — please don’t spend two years treating each symptom as its own mystery. Get a proper perimenopause workup. The good online programs make this a 10-minute intake, not an 11-week wait.
If it’s not hormonal, you’ll have ruled it out. If it is — and statistically, for most women in this age range with this symptom cluster, it is — you’ll have your life back faster than you’d believe possible.

Nora's verdict
Winona was the first place a doctor actually explained my symptoms instead of dismissing them. That's worth a lot. The sleep improved within two weeks. I'm still on it.
